I was trying yet another thing last night and came across a message in a log that my version of Intel ProSet Wireless was not compatible with the version of the driver I was using. Apparently the utility that updated my drivers did not also update ProSet.

I suspect that windows may use some API delivered in Proset as part of their interface to the wireless function.
