Common window xp diagnostic utilities and tools

I will tell you how to do that and also how to use another tool to test your RAM: I uploaded a copy of the file you need to my SkyDrive everybody has a SkyDrive for sharing files. You can download it and when you do, save it to your desktop, launch double click it and follow the instructions.

When you download the file especially if you use Internet Explorer , when you get a chance to save the file, your browser may not save the file with an extension like. You can download the file with no extension and then rename the file to add the proper extension. You don't want to try to use a file called mtinst when the file name really needs to be called mtinst.

If even a single error is reported that is a failure and should make you suspicious of your RAM. If you have multiple sticks of RAM you may need to run the test on them one at a time and change them out to isolate the failure to a particular single stick. Always keep at least the first bank of RAM occupied so the test will find something to do and there is enough to boot your system. Sometimes, reseating the RAM in the slots will relieve the error but a failure is still cause for suspicion.

Update : The resource is no longer available, and web caches don't have a copy of it either. We have removed the link as a consequence. Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. The nine chapters start with anti virus and anti spyware advice, mainly to make sure that the system is malware and spyware free to prevent it from showing any symptoms associated with that including slowdowns, popups, missing files or being used as part of a bot network.

Chapter two and three give advice to use Windows Update, and to update system drivers regularly which are good but rather general tips. Most users should have up to date drivers and use Windows Update to protect the system from newly discovered security vulnerabilities. Still, if you have not done it for a while you should read through the chapters for an overview of what needs to be done to protect your system in the most appropriate manner.

Chapter four, five and six deal with hardware errors and how they can be detected. It links to diagnostic tools for hard drives, memory and the processor that can be used to analyze the hardware to make sure it is working correctly.

The last part of the guide deals with Internet related issues and advanced issues that users may experience. The Internet chapter is not really that helpful in my opinion, but the advanced chapter has some great tool recommendations that users can make use of. The majority of programs recommended in the article are still available on today's Internet. Then, select Network Troubleshooter from the See Also panel. Creating a Network Diagnostics shortcut If you find yourself repeatedly running the Network Diagnostics tool, you can save yourself time and energy by creating a shortcut.

Right-click on the desktop and select New Shortcut. When the Create Shortcut wizard appears, type this command: Netsh diag gui. Click Next, name the shortcut Network Diagnostics, and click Finish. You can leave the new shortcut on the desktop or move it to the Start menu for easy access. When you launch the Network Diagnostics tool, it displays the page shown in Figure A. The Network Diagnostics page provides you with two options: You can immediately launch the scan operation with its default settings, or you can customize the scan operation such that it runs only those tests that you choose.

Figure B There are a number of options you can use to configure how and what the Network Diagnostics tool tests during its scanning operation. However, these tests are already included in the Network Adapter test. Figure C While Network Diagnostics is scanning your system, it keeps you apprised of its progress.
